Orphic Hymn 37, “To the Titans” (author unknown; date perhaps 200-250 CE)
Note: In Orphic theology, the Titans were the progenitors of the human race; the savage and brutal side of our nature stems from their horrible crime in dismembering the infant Dionysus.
O Titans, splendid children of Earth and Heaven,
Ancestors of our fathers, you who dwell
Beneath the earth in Tartarus’ recess,
In you are the beginning and the source
Of all much-suffering mortal men on Earth;
So, too, from you come all sea-dwelling creatures,
And winged birds, and beasts that haunt the land.
For every species, every race, has come
Forth from you, according to due order.
I call upon you- lay aside the grievous
Wrath within your heart, if ever one
Of my earth-dwelling ancestors attacked your home.
The Clash of the Titans, Gustave Doré, 1866
the most unattractive quality to me in other people is constant belittling of what means a lot to others. being contrarian just to be contrarian. people who love to play devil’s advocate. a kind of smugness about everything. an air of being above everyone because you don’t care about anything deeply like the people you mock
